Generators generate stuff.

Rather than having only one predefined state, a generator has multiple states that are selected or influenced by the viewer.

As such each viewer sees something different but the results are always channeled towards a certain set by the creator of the generator.

The simplest and most obiquitus form of generator is the dress up doll. These you will see all over the place on newgrounds or deviantart, they are one thing that most people who go near flash will try and make. Mostly because its real easy to make and fits all the needs of a generator.

Why generators? Well quite simple people feel more connection to things that they have made themselves, even if all they did little more than paint by numbers. So if you want to create something that connects to viewers a generator will do the job ten fold over just producing a single 'generated' result.

You might consider this generated content to be valued less than non generated content but that doesn't matter, since the generator itself is where the value is.
